Many film soundtracks feature segments which can be successfully presented in concert independently of the film for which they were composed. Sometimes the music is more well-known and enduring than the films which they illustrate.
The symphonic film score has established itself as a music genre with parallel to the standard canon of symphonic repertoire and there is an enthusiastic and growing audience for new orchestral film scores
This appeal is certainly connected to the powerful images of the films themselves. Another explanation can certainly be found in the way the best modern film composers mix together disparate musical genres and styles with virtuosity and disdain for taboos. The best film composers active today nearly all seem to mesh a fine craft of composing with an extraordinary openness and practicability.
