Much of the Filmorchestra's fine reputation is earned through its presentation of live orchestral presentations of 'silent' films by Charlie Chaplin, Fritz Lang and Alfred Hitchcock and by concerts of works by major contemporary film composers such as John Williams and Hans Zimmer.
Other orchestras with whom Lawton has worked as a guest conductor are the WDR Rundfunkorchester, the Staatsorchester Rheinische Philharmonie, the Saarlndisches Staatsrchester and the Cologne Philharmonic; this first-ever concert of film music played by the Cologne Philharmonic featured lesser-known compositions for film by British masters such as Sir Malcolm Arnold, Bernard Herrman, Sir William Walton, Ron Goodwin and Alex North.
From 1999 to 2002 he served as music director of the German-language version of the New York production of "Chicago" which played in Berlin, Munich, Basel and Dsseldorf. This production - perhaps the most successful 'revival' of a musical in Broadway history - was originally mounted by the City Center "Encores!" series under the musical direction of Rob Fisher.
